about

The master of ceremonies stands on stage next to a phonograph playing the songs of a recently-deceased blues master. As the set ends, the music receives a standing ovation, and although many in the crowd are disappointed about not seeing the Mississippi bluesman in the flesh, they feel moved just the same.

Nearly one hundred years later, a laptop DJ performs on stage moving the crowd with popular contemporary cuts. A music video illuminates a dark basement bedroom, while a young musician views in awe, strumming his guitar. A concert performed by a pop icon is streamed to millions of viewers via the Internet. A person who came of age when 8-tracks and cassette tapes were popular, enters the name of a group into an online music streaming service. Dozens of listening suggestions by similar artists then appear. Meanwhile, a live orchestra performs on the same stage where the phonograph was placed one hundred years before.

With the days of the traditional jingle declining, a young electronic musician—after hearing a song by one of her favorite artists in a television commercial—sits in front of her computer and MIDI controller, composing a track that she hopes is accepted for an upcoming documentary...with her eyes focused on the screen, she clicks record, and the metronome gives her a four-count (click, click, click, click...).
